The Met Gala is one of those nights where fashion, politics, and entertainment all come together under one roof. Over the years, the guest list has even occasionally featured high-profile political figures, such as former President Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan at the 1977 event, and more recently, former Vice President Kamala Harris at the 2025 event.

President Donald Trump has attended the Met Gala multiple times in the past, too, and even proposed to his wife Melania at the 2004 Met Gala.

“It was a great surprise,” Melania told the New York Post at the time. “We are very happy together.”

Trump added on Live with Regis and Kelly, “We’ve had a great relationship. We’ve been together for five years and it was really time.”

But Trump hasn’t shown up to the Met Gala since 2016—and it seems unlikely he’ll be invited back anytime soon.

As it turns out, Trump is widely reportedly as being the only person banned from the Met Gala. During an October 2017 appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, former Vogue editor-in-chief and Met Gala host Anna Wintour took part in the hit segment “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” with host James Corden. When asked who she would never invite back to the annual fundraising gala, Wintour answered immediately: “Donald Trump,” prompting applause and cheers from both the audience and Corden.

Even though Trump is the only one publicly singled out in discussions about being banned from the Met Gala, there’s been speculation that it could extend to his entire family as well, who were once frequent attendees.

His daughter, Ivanka Trump, made her Met Gala debut in 2004 and continued attending annually, with her final appearance in 2016. Some have suggested that after Wintour made it clear that Trump was no longer welcome at the Met Gala, Ivanka chose not to return, possibly out of respect for her father.
