Anne Hathaway‘s Met Gala dress may have been the confirmation for The Princess Diaries 3 we’ve all been waiting for. Hathaway attended the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute on Monday, March 4, in a regal black-and-white ballgown with a plunging neckline and a gold necklace fit only for a queen (or a princess). On the dress is a hand with a white dove, a common symbol for peace.

Hathaway completed the look with a tight bun reminiscent of the one worn by Mia Thermopolis wore in one of the final scenes of The Princess Diaries. In fact, if there’s anyone who could broker peace around the world, it’s the Princess of Genovia, which makes us wonder if Hathaway’s 2026 look was a clue that Princess Diaries 3 is close to coming out.

The Hollywood Reporter reported in 2022 that a third Princess Diaries movie was in the works at Disney. While a release date hasn’t been announced, Hathaway told Entertainment Weekly in April that the film was still in production. “100%, we’re constantly working on it,” she said, explaining that she had to pause her work on the film to focus on The Devil Wears Prada 2.

“[Devil Wears Prada 2] cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space. It became impossible to focus on both at the same time,” she continued, adding that her “intention is to make Princess Diaries hopefully next.” She also noted that, while she hopes the film is made, a third movie in the series “is not greenlit or confirmed yet.”

“If I learned anything from [Devil Wears Prada 2], it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park,” Hathaway said. Streep, who was in the same interview, added “You’ve got to wait for the right script.”

The Princess Diaries premiered in 2001 and was followed up with a sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, in 2004. Hathaway has hinted at her upcoming projects at the Met Gala before. At the 2025 Met Gala, she wore a white Caroline Herrera button-up shirt reminiscent of the office attire donned by her Devil Wears Prada character, Andy Sachs. The look, which was also a nod to fashion journalist André Leon Talley, came just months before The Devil Wears Prada 2 announced its release date.

Now that The Devil Wears Prada 2 is officially in theaters, Hathaway could have her much-needed time to make The Princess Diaries 3 happen.
