Kamala Harris is reportedly starting a new chapter without her husband, Doug Emhoff.
According to a May 19 report from RadarOnline, the former vice president quietly purchased an $8.15 million mansion in Malibu amid claims her marriage is “hanging on by a thread.” Emhoff is staying at their Brentwood home, while rumors have it that the Malibu home could become the “perfect retreat” for another presidential campaign.
“Kamala is focused on trying to win the Democratic nomination again – with or without Doug’s support,” a source told the outlet. Other sources claim Emhoff wants Kamala to “quit” while she’s ahead so “they can go back to living a private life.”
“Another White House run will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” they added.
Insiders allege that Kamala’s loss to President Donald Trump in the 2024 election put significant strain on her and Emhoff’s marriage. In her 2025 memoir 107 Days, Kamala acknowledged the challenges she and Emhoff faced during her campaign and even wrote about one of their many arguments.
Kamala recalled that just weeks before Election Day, Emhoff flew in to spend her birthday with her. She said she was “looking forward to a special evening with Doug” and hoped he had planned something nice for her, but he didn’t. In fact, Emhoff allegedly didn’t put any effort into choosing their hotel and didn’t even consider where they’d go for dinner.
“It turned out to be a bland establishment whose red-and-black decor looked like it hadn’t been redone since the ’70s. The only distinguished feature of the room was its larger size, but the curtains were broken,” Kamala noted.
The campaign also sparked renewed attention around Emhoff’s alleged affair during his first marriage. “That was an embarrassing revelation that did her candidacy no favors,” one insider explained to RadarOnline. “In fact, the demands on Emhoff during the entire campaign put a strain on their marriage.”
They continued, “Both of their images were battered in the last election. The last thing Emhoff wanted was for his affair to become public fodder and all the criticism of her performance added to the strain between them.”
