Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has been in the news for many reasons outside of his business in the past few years. There was his divorce from Mackenzie Scott, and the fact that Scott has now become one of the world’s biggest philanthropists. There’s his wedding to Lauren Sánchez in Venice, a big event that was attended by a who’s who of Hollywood stars. And then there’s his involvement as a sponsor of the Met Gala.
Recently, there have been rumors that Bezos was selling his super yacht, Koru. The 417-foot yacht is thought to be the largest sailing yacht in the world, or near the top. But now, People is reporting that these rumors are wrong, Bezos is not selling. That’s probably a good thing considering the vessel features a wooden sculpture of what some say is Bezos’ wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, as a mermaid on the prow.

Sánchez has said the statue is Freyja, the Norse goddess of love, fertility, war, and gold. “I’m very flattered, but it’s not [me],” she told Vogue in December 2023.
Either way, if people are convinced it’s Sánchez, that would have probably been a problem if Bezos did want to sell. That, and you know, the sheer size of the yacht, which reportedly costs about $30 million per year to operate. Who can even afford that? The list is probably so short that Bezos could get potential buyers on the phone.
The yacht’s size has been an issue before. According to Page Six, the couple has run into the problem of the yacht being too big to dock at different places around the world. This even happened in Venice, during the couple’s wedding celebrations. Perhaps that’s why the vessel comes with a $75 million support ship, Abeona. When even your yacht has a boat, that’s when you know you’ve made it, or something.
Reports also indicate Bezos proposed to his wife on the yacht, so perhaps there’s sentimental value there for the couple.
All of this comes as the couple has faced allegations that the adjustment to married life has been complicated, to say the least. Particularly as they reportedly have two very different energy levels. “Lauren’s energy is non-stop,” a source told Rob Shuter, who reported on their Christmas holidays. “She was jumping, dancing, laughing — and Jeff was hanging on for dear life. He looked wiped.”
“He’s happy, but he’s clearly worn out trying to match her,” another source said. Despite these reports, however, the couple has been seen together recently, most notably at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty and then at the Met Gala, where Sánchez walked the red carpet, and Bezos chose to join her inside for the event, perhaps to avoid the backlash caused by sponsoring the event.
According to Rob Shuter, Bezos spent at least $15 million as a sponsor of the gala. And yet, his presence caused a controversy, with some people indicating they would boycott the event because of his involvement.
