Meghan Markle has faced intense scrutiny for years, and it doesn’t seem like it’s going away anytime soon. Even Saturday Night Live recently took aim at the Duchess of Sussex, and to say she’s unhappy about it would be an understatement.

During the “Weekend Update” segment on the May 2, 2026, episode, Colin Jost joked about the royal family while discussing King Charles’ official state visit. He quipped that Charles and Queen Camilla had traveled to the U.S. to “seek the release of a British hostage being held by an American terrorist,” as a photo of Meghan and Prince Harry appeared onscreen.

According to sources who spoke with Rob Shuter via his Naughty But Nice Substack, Meghan’s “furious” over the joke and extremely upset about being labeled an “American terrorist.”

“Meghan does not laugh when she feels publicly humiliated,” one insider told Shuter. “She sees this as deliberate, cheap, and personal—and once she feels mocked, she shuts the door.”

Reports also claim Meghan no longer wants to play nice with NBC. “This is what Meghan does,” another source added. “When she feels attacked, she doesn’t confront—she cuts off access. She distanced herself from Vanity Fair after coverage turned, and now NBC is getting the same treatment.”

It’s worth noting that NBC owns the USA Network, the channel that aired Meghan’s series Suits for eight years. Meghan starred on the hit legal drama for the first seven seasons, playing paralegal-turned-attorney Rachel Zane. She confirmed her exit from the show shortly after announcing her engagement to Harry.

Suits creator Aaron Korsh spoke with BBC Radio 4’s Today in November 2017 and revealed that he’d already been planning on wrapping up Meghan’s story due to her romance with the prince.

“I knew from a year ago that this relationship was burgeoning. And I had a decision to make because I didn’t want to intrude and ask her, ‘hey what’s going on and what are you going to do?’” he explained. “So collectively with the writers, we decided to take a gamble that these two people were in love and it was going to work out.”

Korsh continued, “What we decided to do [was to] say, ‘Look, I would rather have good things happen to Meghan in her life’ —which would likely mean her leaving the show. So let’s plan on that and it’s much easier to undo that, if it came to it, than to just plan on her staying forever and then finding out she’s going to go.”

Harry opened up about Meghan’s departure in his 2023 memoir, Spare. “Meg packed up her house, gave up her role in Suits. After seven seasons,” he wrote. “A difficult moment for her, because she loved that show, loved the character she was playing, loved her cast and crew—loved Canada.”

“On the other hand life there had become untenable. Especially on set,” Harry continued. “The show writers were frustrated because they were often advised by the Palace comms team to change lines of dialogue, what her character would do, how she would act.”
