Adrienne Bailon-Houghton is proudly defending a few of her most questionable food combinations, including pineapple on pizza and her viral fruit punch tuna sandwich.
StyleCaster took Bailon-Houghton on a trip down memory lane for its “Digital Footprint Diary” series, where she looked back on her Disney Channel and Cheetah Girls days—and, of course, that infamous sandwich that sent social media into a frenzy.
Back in January 2019, the singer posted a video to her YouTube channel showing off her favorite weird food combinations, including the now-notorious “tuna punch.” The sandwich featured tuna salad mixed with fruit punch, which she also dipped straight into a glass of the drink.
“I stand by this,” Bailon-Houghton told StyleCaster, joking that she was “going home and making this today” because it’s absolutely “delicious.”
Regarding the 2019 video, the Emmy-winning host admitted that dipping the sandwich in fruit punch “was extra”—but she’d “still do it” today.
“The people that were flabbergasted by this… the idea of soggy bread was way too much for them to handle,” Bailon-Houghton explained, adding that everyone she’s met who was initially “completely grossed out” by the tuna punch eventually tried it and loved it. “They taste it and they’re like, ‘Oh, this is actually very good,’” she said.
The self-proclaimed “sweet and salty girl” also clued StyleCaster in on how the tuna punch came to fruition. When she was younger, she made herself a tuna sandwich after school—and she accidentally spilled fruit punch on it.
“I wasn’t going to let it go to waste,” Bailon-Houghton noted. “And then I tasted it and I was like, ‘Oh, this is nice,’ and ever since then, I just like it.”
