As of this writing, Nancy Guthrie has been missing for more than 100 days, and police are no closer to cracking the case.

The public has criticized Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos and his team for their lack of solid leads in Nancy’s alleged kidnapping, but Sheriff Nanos told People in a May 14 report that “this is just like any other case. Sometimes you solve them within hours or days. Sometimes it takes a long time.”

Elsewhere in the report, Sheriff Nanos confirmed that he’s no longer “directly communicating” with Nancy’s family, including Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, and acknowledged that they must be “frustrated” with the unanswered questions.

“The public is frustrated. Even the Guthrie family,” he said. “Every passing second must feel like 100 days because they don’t know. What matters is moving forward carefully so we don’t make mistakes or falsely accuse somebody or make a bad arrest.”

Sheriff Nanos also revealed that the FBI leads communication with Savannah and her family in the ongoing search for Nancy. This follows reports that Sheriff Nanos initially refused to work with the FBI in the early days of the investigation, which multiple sources claimed may have “hindered the investigation.”

“He is a person who holds a grudge and is still angry at the FBI for appropriately investigating his office in 2016 for misuse of racketeering funds,” Pima County Board of Supervisors member Matt Heinz told NewsNation. “That investigation was very legitimate. You can see his bias against the FBI in an interview he gave in 2016, where he stated that the FBI could come to him and he would show them how to do an investigation.”

Even though it was 10 years ago, Heniz believes Sheriff Nanos still hasn’t moved on, which has hurt Nancy’s investigation. “The relationships matter in all investigations,” Heinz explained. “And the relationship with the FBI matters greatly, especially in difficult, high-profile investigations. And not having those relationships can have some consequences.”
