Nearly half a decade after Prince Philip’s death at age 99 on April 9, 2021, his family still speaks fondly of him. In fact, King Charles has even opened up about his father’s last words to him.

In the 2021 BBC documentary Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers, Charles shared that he and Philip’s last conversation took place on April 8, the day before Philip passed away. During their chat, Charles tried to talk about the exciting plans in store for Philip’s 100th birthday, which would’ve been on June 10, 2021.

“I said [loudly], ‘We’re talking about your birthday,’ because he was getting a bit deaf,” Charles recalled. “And he said, ‘What?’ And I said, ‘We’re talking about your birthday and whether there’s going to be a reception.'”

Philip reportedly replied, “Well, I’ve got to be alive for it, haven’t I?”

“I said, ‘I knew you’d say that!'” Charles added in the documentary. “Anyway, it’s a happy memory.”

Philip passed away peacefully on April 9, 2021, at Windsor Castle. The cause of death was listed as “old age,” according to The Telegraph.

One day after Philip’s death, Charles shared an emotional tribute to his father, calling him a “very special person” whom he and his family would miss “enormously.”

“I particularly wanted to say that my father, for I suppose the last 70 years, has given the most remarkable, devoted service to The Queen, to my family and to the country, but also to the whole of the Commonwealth,” he said in a video message. “As you can imagine, my family and I miss my father enormously. He was a much loved and appreciated figure and apart from anything else, I can imagine, he would be so deeply touched by the number of other people here and elsewhere around the world and the Commonwealth, who also I think, share our loss and our sorrow.”

He concluded. “My dear Papa was a very special person who I think above all else would have been amazed by the reaction and the touching things that have been said about him and from that point of view we are, my family, deeply grateful for all that. It will sustain us in this particular loss and at this particularly sad time. Thank you.”
