In a shocking turn of events, the South Carolina Supreme Court has overturned Alex Murdaugh‘s two life sentences for the murders of his wife Maggie and son Paul in June 2021, ordering that the case be retried. The unanimous ruling was announced on May 13, 2026, with the court saying county clerk Rebecca “Becky” Hill had wrongfully influenced the jury during the 2023 trial.
“Our justice system provides—indeed demands—that every person is entitled to a fair trial, which includes an impartial jury untainted by external forces bent on influencing the jury toward a biased verdict,” the justices wrote, per People. “Although we are aware of the time, money, and effort expended for this lengthy trial, we have no choice but to reverse the denial of Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial due to Hill’s improper external influences on the jury and remand for a new trial.”
As Murdaugh prepares to fight to clear his name, a source told the Daily Mail that his surviving son, Richard Alexander “Buster” Murdaugh, is “furious” about the ruling and the possibility of revisiting the “family nightmare.”
“He’s not happy. This is going to put him through all of this again,” the source told the outlet. “He has to relive the hardest years of his life all over again.”
They continued, “Buster needs some time to process this. But he’s not happy at all. … This is a nightmare. How is Buster supposed to move forward to have this happen again?”
The insider also criticized Murdaugh’s request for a retrial and described him as a “selfish, selfish old man.”
“It’s more poking at a wound that’s not even healed yet,” the source added. “What happens if the whole thing happens [again] and he’s convicted again? It’ll put us all through this s— again.”
Buster initially supported Murdaugh during the 2023 double murder trial and even testified in his defense. In FOX Nation’s The Fall of the House of Murdaugh, he said, “I do not think that he could be affiliated with endangering my mother and brother. We have been here for a while now and that’s been my stance.”
After the guilty verdict, Buster reportedly distanced himself from his father and has kept a low profile with his wife, Brooklynn White.
According to the Daily Mail, his relationship with Murdaugh has “grown increasingly strained,” and the father-son duo have only had “a couple of phone calls” over the years. The source added that, despite this new ruling, Buster will not pay a visit to his father in prison.
