Over three months after Nancy Guthrie disappeared, the investigation continues. And though Savannah Guthrie is back on the Today show, she and her family are still hoping to get answers about what happened to Nancy after she was taken from her house sometime between the night of January 31 and the morning of February 1.
And now it’s being reported that the family has requested Nancy’s inner circle refrain from making any public statements while the investigation is ongoing. “We’ve heard from several [sources] that the Guthrie family has asked Nancy’s close friends to keep things private right now,” NewsNation’s Brian Entin told Parade, per The Mirror. “You haven’t seen a lot of her close friends come forward and talk about her, which is different than other cases.”

Entin also speculated that people in the neighborhood are still nervous about what happened. “I also think people here are still nervous about the whole thing,” he said. “For us covering it, we live in different states, but people who live here in Tucson, especially in the neighborhood, these kinds of things don’t happen.
“And the fact that there’s no new information and they have no idea who did it, I think people are just still nervous about the whole thing, which might be why you don’t see as many people talking about it,” he continued.
The journalist also pointed out that, “It’s been interesting to see who wants to talk and who doesn’t.” For example, Nancy’s church friends were the first to report that something was wrong when she didn’t attend the service on Sunday, February 1. But, “No one has said anything,” Entin said.
All of this comes after Savannah Guthrie departed Today mid-show for a second time on May 6. She left about 90 minutes into the show, with co-host Craig Melvin informing viewers she had left for an undisclosed reason. Reports indicated she had “some sort of appointment,” but most people aren’t buying that excuse, particularly since Guthrie had also left early on April 15, right after introducing Anne Hathaway and seemingly when she was about to interview her.
A longtime TV insider told Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack that “Savannah’s entire life is built around those two hours on-air,” adding that “doctor appointments, meetings, interviews, family obligations—everything gets scheduled around Today.“
“You do not suddenly walk off set unless something unusual is happening,” they added.
If people are suspicious about her two absences, it’s because there’s allegedly a plan in place for NBC to pull Guthrie off the air if there’s an update in the investigation.
“There are strict protocols if anything breaks in her mother’s case while Savannah is live on-air. Apparently this wasn’t that—which honestly makes the whole thing feel even stranger,” a source had previously told Shuter. However, everyone insists her two absences were not related to that.
Police have not yet identified a suspect or disclosed a motive, and are currently hoping that DNA evidence recovered from the scene can provide a lead on a possible person of interest. The reward for any information about Nancy’s alleged kidnapping is over $1 million at this point.
