Nancy Guthrie remains missing months later, and her fate is still unknown to the public. However, reports suggest her suspected kidnapper may be dead.

In a new TV special, NewsNation Presents: The Nancy Guthrie Mystery, host Brian Entin meets with leading criminal profilers to discuss the case and analyze the evidence in hopes of figuring out what exactly happened to Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie.

As of this writing, authorities have not determined whether the alleged kidnapping involved one or more individuals, nor whether the masked intruder caught on Guthrie’s doorbell camera near her front door is still alive.

Even so, forensic nurse Dr. Ann Burgess revealed in the special that she believes the disguised person on Guthrie’s porch may have been killed shortly after the incident.

“I just had a thought. That person [on Nancy’s stoop] may have been eliminated,” Dr. Burgess claimed, per Parade. When Entin asked who might’ve killed them, she answered, “the boss.”

“It was well-planned,” she said. “They got away with it. And they pulled a type of case that we’ve never seen before, as far as we know.”

Criminal psychologist Dr. Gary Brucato offered a different perspective, suggesting via NewsNation that more than one individual was involved. He added that if that assailant is “alive and is caught,” he could “lead down the spider web to the center” of the operation.

“That amateur hour kind of quality is interesting also, and suggests to me a difference in intelligences,” Dr. Brucato continued. “Some schemer behind the scenes, and this character who is the sort of hired or asked to do this. I don’t believe this person worked alone… I think there is a little group of people.”

Regarding whether Guthrie knew the masked person captured on her doorbell camera, criminology Dr. Casey Jordan said he believes the elderly woman likely didn’t know them—but they knew her.

“This person knew her. I don’t think she knew this person,” Dr. Jordan explained, speculating that “it could have been somebody who saw her on the Today show with her daughter, Savannah.”

Guthrie was last seen on the night of Jan. 31, 2026. Police have not yet named a suspect or a potential motive, and the reward for any information about her disappearance remains over $1 million.
