Disgraced formal Prince Andrew could be on the verge being stripped of another title.
According to RadarOnline, the ex-royal, who had all of his royal titles and privileges revoked in October 2025 due to his connection to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, is at risk of losing the Freedom of the City of London.
The outlet reported that the City of London Corporation has officially confirmed it will ask Andrew to “formally relinquish the freedom.”
“Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor received the freedom of the City of London in 2012 by virtue of patrimony, which is inherited as the child of a freeman and constitutes a legal right,” a spokesperson told RadarOnline. “Applications via patrimony are not considered or endorsed by our elected members, and there is no effective legal mechanism to remove this type of freedom.”
They continued, “Elected members have today agreed to write to Mr Mountbatten-Windsor, inviting him to formally relinquish the freedom. They will consider the response received, if any, at a future meeting, and determine what action may be taken.”
A source noted that this move comes amid growing concern about whether Andrew should still be allowed to keep the Freedom of the City of London. “There is a clear feeling that continuing to hold this honor is no longer appropriate given the circumstances,” they said, “and while they cannot strip it away, the expectation is that he should step aside voluntarily to avoid further reputational damage to the institution.”
The Freedom of the City of London dates as far back as the 13th century and once allowed recipients to trade in the capital city. These days, it’s become a largely honorary distinction, granted by the City council members to individuals they choose to recognize.
One insider said it’s now “about optics as much as anything else. The honor carries a sense of prestige and public trust, and there is concern that its association with Andrew undermines that in the current climate.”
