The Met Gala is arguable the biggest fashion event of the year, where celebrities across industries gather to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Guests arrive in their most glamorous looks, and the event often features variations of the “naked dress” trend.
There’s no denying the popularity of this aesthetic among A-listers. Cher wore a sheer feather ensemble designed by Bob Mackie at the 1974 Met Gala, which caused quite a stir. Mackie told Interview that “it was just amazing.” He added, “People were horrified, they thought, that’s not fashion, she’s just naked at the Metropolitan.”
The criticism didn’t last, though, as the trend has continued to appear on the Met Gala red carpets ever since. With that in mind, here are some of the most memorable nude-inspired looks from the Met Gala over the years.
At the 2015 Met Gala, Beyoncé wore a custom Givenchy sheer gown and sequin-covered gown that embraced the “naked” dress aesthetic.
Zoë Kravitz wore a bejeweled mesh Saint Laurent dress to the 2021 Met Gala, styled with a tiny bralette and matching thong. She called the look “pretty bold and very sparkly” in an interview with Vogue at the time.
Kendall Jenner is essentially Met Gala royalty and a consistent source of stunning outfits. At the 2021 edition, the supermodel wore a custom Givenchy “naked” dress covered in crystals, inspired by Audrey Hephern’s gown in My Fair Lady.
Vanessa Hudgens made a striking appearance at the 2022 Met Gala in a sheer black Moschino ball gown, embracing a see-through take on classic white-tie eveningwear.
Janelle Monáe delivered a memorable outfit change at the 2023 Met Gala, shedding a custom Thom Brown oversized tuxedo on the stairs to reveal a hoop skirt layered over a black bikini.
Superman actress Rachel Brosnahan leaned into the nude trend at the 2023 Met Gala, arriving in a racy Sergio Hudson gown that featured a low-rise skirt and nipple covers.
For the 2024 Met Gala, model Emily Ratajkowski turned to the Versace archives in search of her next “naked” dress. She donned a coveted Fall/Winter 2021 archival gown covered in crystals and finished in a semi-transparent fabric, giving it that barely-there effect.
Grammy winner Doja Cat proved she’s a full-fledged Met Gala provocateur at the 2024 edition, donning a trio of attention-grabbing looks. She was first seen leaving her hotel in nothing but a towel before changing into a wet, oversized Vetements T-shirt dress for the carpet. The sheer, clingy fabric left little to the imagination. For the after-party, Doja wore a nude two-piece set that was almost entirely sheer.
Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry made her long-awaited return to the Met Gala in 2025—and she did so in a daring, head-turning look. She stepped out in a custom LaQuan Smith gown defined by sheer strips arranged in a striped pattern and a plunging neckline.
