The Met Gala is arguable the biggest fashion event of the year, where celebrities across industries gather to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Guests arrive in their most glamorous looks, and the event often features variations of the “naked dress” trend.

There’s no denying the popularity of this aesthetic among A-listers. Cher wore a sheer feather ensemble designed by Bob Mackie at the 1974 Met Gala, which caused quite a stir. Mackie told Interview that “it was just amazing.” He added, “People were horrified, they thought, that’s not fashion, she’s just naked at the Metropolitan.”

The criticism didn’t last, though, as the trend has continued to appear on the Met Gala red carpets ever since. With that in mind, here are some of the most memorable nude-inspired looks from the Met Gala over the years.
