The Truth About if Savannah Guthrie Left Today Mid-Show Because Something ‘Broke’ in Nancy’s Case While ‘Live On-Air’
Reports claimed that Savannah Guthrie‘s second mid-show departure from Today was due to her having “some sort of appointment,” but not everyone is convinced by that explanation.
A longtime TV insider told Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack that “Savannah’s entire life is built around those two hours on-air,” adding that “doctor appointments, meetings, interviews, family obligations—everything gets scheduled around Today.“
“You do not suddenly walk off set unless something unusual is happening,” they claimed.
After Guthrie left the May 6 broadcast early, co-anchor Craig Melvin simply told viewers that she “had to leave a little early” but would be back the next day. Sources said this excuse doesn’t hold up given how carefully organized network morning TV shows usually are.
“If Savannah landed an interview with the president, they’d either do it live on the show or tape it afterward,” the source continued. “Nobody disappears mid-broadcast for a scheduling conflict. That almost never happens.”
Guthrie’s unexpected departure quickly fueled renewed speculation tied to her 84-year-old mother Nancy’s disappearance. Nancy’s been missing Jan. 31, 2026, and police believe she was abducted from her Arizona home in the middle of the night.
There’s allegedly a plan in place for NBC to pull Guthrie off the air immediately if there are any possible updates in Nancy’s case, but sources told Shuter her recent exit had nothing to do with the ongoing investigation.
At the same time, NBC’s extensive coverage of the tragedy has drawn plenty of attention within the industry. “No network has leaned harder into this story than NBC,” one insider said. “Today, Nightly News, primetime specials—it’s been everywhere. And with Good Morning America getting dangerously close in the ratings, some people are starting to wonder if the mystery itself has become part of the programming.”
Another source, however, clarified that Guthrie’s abrupt exit wasn’t due to a breakthrough in Nancy’s case. “There are strict protocols if anything breaks in her mother’s case while Savannah is live on-air. Apparently this wasn’t that—which honestly makes the whole thing feel even stranger.”
Police have not yet identified a suspect or motive, and the reward for any information about Nancy’s alleged kidnapping is up to $1 million.
