The 2019 Leaving Neverland Michael Jackson documentary is back in the spotlight after the release of the biopic, Michael, on April 24, 2026. Some critics of the latter are saying it dodges the singer’s sexual abuse allegations, which is why people are revisiting Leaving Neverland and trying to figure out where they can watch it in the U.S.
The documentary includes accusations by Wade Robson and James Safechuck against Jackson. The two talk about their experiences with the singer when they were young boys and how it’s impacted them ever since. The documentary centers around the accusers’ points of view, which is exactly what’s drawing in Michael viewers. If you, too, are wondering about the allegations made against Jackson in Leaving Neverland, we uncovered a way to watch the documentary online for free in the U.S.
Leaving Neverland isn’t currently available to watch anywhere in the U.S. While it was originally released by HBO in 2019 on HBO Max, it got removed from the streamer in 2024 because of a legal battle between the Jackson estate and HBO. The former party claimed the film broke a nondisparagement clause in a 1992 contract between Jackson and the cable network. As a result, the two-part documentary hasn’t been added to any other streaming service since the lawsuit ended in 2024.
There is, however, a clever workaround for watching Leaving Neverland in the U.S. American viewers can access the documentary through Netflix Japan, which you can use with the help of a VPN, a service that allows users to set their computer’s location to another country and access websites that would otherwise be restricted by location. The documentary can be watched on Netflix Japan because streaming rights are by region, so if Netflix Japan secured rights just for Japan, it can proceed to let people stream it. Meanwhile, Netflix cannot show it in the U.S. because it does not have the rights.
But, back to the workaround: a VPN. The most popular VPNs are ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and PureVPN—all of which offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. Continue scrolling to find out how to sign up for them and how much they cost so that you can stream Leaving Neverland in the U.S.
Leaving Neverland director, Dan Reed, made a sequel, Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson, that released on YouTube last year. It originally premiered on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom on March 18, 2025, and it follows Robson and Safechuck and what has gone down since their allegations went public. Reed is apparently working on another piece to accompany the original doc and sequel.
