With King Charles now in the US for a state visit, the relationship between him and US President Donald Trump is being scrutinized once again. The two have seemingly been on good terms on both this state visit and the one Trump made to the UK not that long ago. But are they friends?

One report indicates they might actually be related. RadarOnline alleges that newly surfaced genealogical research suggests the two are distant cousins, both descended from a 16th-century Scottish nobleman. And reportedly, Charles’ reaction to the news was less than positive.

“There was a degree of discomfort at the discovery – not because of the historical connection itself, which is not unusual among European and transatlantic lineages, but because Charles basically detests everything Trump stands for,” a source said. “He is, frankly, sickened to know they have any relation. He hates Trump’s foreign policy, environmental policy, his manners, and his personality – but even he can see the humor in him being related to someone he hates.”

Reportedly, their connection traces back to the 3rd Earl of Lennox, a descendant of James II of Scotland. Trump’s maternal line, through his mother Mary Anne MacLeod, is said to connect to the same extended family tree that leads to the House of Windsor. All of this would mean King Charles and President Trump are distant cousins.

Hollywood Insider Rob Shuter reported that, though the two men don’t have much in common, Charles enjoys Trump. “They don’t agree on everything — actually, they agree on almost nothing,” a source said. “But Charles has always had a soft spot for people who are sharp, unpredictable and know how to command a room. Joan had that. Donald has that too.” The comparison with Joan Rivers, who was a friend of Charles, is said to be a positive one.

“The King likes people who entertain him,” another insider said. “He doesn’t need everyone to agree with him. He needs them to be interesting. Donald is interesting. Joan was interesting. That matters to Charles.”

So, reportedly, the relationship is very good. “They are Washington’s new odd couple,” one source added. “They have almost nothing in common on paper, and yet Charles genuinely seems to enjoy him.”

Trump has been nothing but complimentary of the British royal family. Of the late Queen, he said, “I had a really good relationship with her. She was unbelievable. I liked her, and she liked me.”

Some reports have indicated that the Queen found Trump rude.

After the recent state visit to the UK, Trump said King Charles was “wonderful” and described the Royal Family as “great hosts.” Earlier last year, he’d said, “I’m a friend of Charles. I have great respect for King Charles and the family, William. We have really just a great respect for the family.”

So, cousins or not, it seems like the relationship between the King of England and the President of the United States is about as cordial as it can possibly be.
